You can make a difference!

I heard about this delightful young woman on NPR that started the above website to help keep costs low for paper. What she ultimately did was she figured out an effortless way to conserve paper.
Please change your margins! And sign the petition to get Microsoft to change their default margins entirely!
Little bits from www.ChangetheMargins.com:
The default margins for Microsoft Word are set at 1.25″ on each side. According to the good people on the Microsoft Help line, there is no technical reason for this. It’s merely a convention we have all gotten used to. Documents will print just as easily if you change the margins to .75″ on each side.
In October 2001, a research team of the Penn State Green Destiny Council released a report on the ecological analysis of Mueller Laboratory, a biology building on the Penn State University Park campus. This policy paper, derived from the report, showed how PSU could save 72 acres of forest and over $120,000/year by reducing the default margin settings campus wide.
Here are some general stats I’ve come across in my research about paper usage and the environment. I’ll soon be adding in more specific stats on just what changing the margins can do. But for now, alarm yourselves with these loverly numbers…
-In prehistoric times, 60% of the earth’s surface was covered by forests – today that amount has been reduced by 30% and is still shrinking.
-It takes 17 pulpwood market-sized trees and 390 gallons of oil to make a ton of paper
-That ton of paper, when disposed of, takes up nearly 8 cubic feet of public landfill space.
-That public landfill is approximately 36% waste paper products.
-Each one million pages of paper not printed saves 85 pulp trees.
-Each person in an office on average uses 2.5 pounds of paper each week. In the U.S., a ton = 2000 pounds, so that means every 2 years and 70 days, each person in an office on average uses a ton of paper. Now re-read the stats above and see how those numbers hit you. Suddenly, a ton doesn’t seem like such an abstract number.
-Americans discard 4 million tons of office paper every year — enough to build a 12 foot high wall of paper from New York to California.
Win Lose or Draw Championships
Yesterday we had an all day Sunday Brunch at my house complete with Win Lose or Draw Championships and a spirited game of ImagineIff… Our rules differ slightly to the traditional house rules for both games. For instance, Imagineiff…’s questions may be changed to something funnier that might not necessarily go with the answers.
Imagineiff… Jake Bercovici were a piece of sporting equipment which would he be: stripper, what would his stage name be:
A. Baseball Mitt
B. Foul Pole
C. Horse Shoe
etc. etc. etc.
The Win Lose or Draw Championship title definitely has to go to Bradley for stumping everyone with “WILD PEACH” in the category of “chewing gum flavors”. I’m not exactly sure what he was trying to draw, or if the point is to stump people, but it was so funny that he kept drawing all this nonsense and we couldn’t understand that it was “WILD”. Such a fun Sunday!

Book Club

We finally got our acts together and chose a book for our Book Club we wanted to start. This month’s Book Club book is The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan.
I’M MAD AS HELL…
Jeffrey Emerson is MAD AS HELL…..and I am too. What about you? Can you take it anymore? Mr. Emerson’s blog writing rings all too many truths.
Organic Materials
For the environmentally conscious designer seeking natural and organic fabrics see Near Sea Naturals. They offer a pretty hefty assortment of organic woven and knit fabrics including jersey and wool without all the sad stuff like chemicals, pesticides or harsh dyes. Low minimums, reasonable pricing and good for the environment all in a day’s work.
Wine: Poppy Pinot Noir 2006

This will be my first blog about wine. I drink a lot of wine and champagne and I think my advice might help my readers to explore new choices of drink other than Jagger shots and Jack Daniels. Nothing wrong with Jagger and Jack….but in case you’re feeling a little less self destructive, read on.
Tonight I will be drinking – not tasting (I only believe spitting wine out is for frou frou wine tastings with your parents, when it tastes like it should be spit and for being dramatic) so if I become drunk, then I’ll just have to continue on drunk – Poppy Pinot Noir 2006. I bought my bottle at K&L Wines for $12.99 (which you can do too by clicking here or visiting them on Vine and Sunset), but this bottle can go for up to $18.99 or $24.99. Not exactly expensive in the world of wines, but I like to pay $15-$30 for my wines and champagnes so I’m willing to shop around a little or even try something new.
Poppy is gown from Pinot Noir vineyards in Monterey County, California. Although I like to give the benefit of the doubt towards the underdog, it is well known that a ton of mass produced wines come from these vineyards. However, it’s roumored that Pinot Noir is particulary developed in this region with much promise.
This is my second time trying Poppy. It was recommended to me by my friend Jake who just loves Pinot Noir these days. Upon my first encounter, I thought Poppy was a bit too sweet for me. This time I’ve paired it with a spicey pasta sauce and it really has pushed forth the fruitiness of the wine. This is a great light summertime Pinot Noir with a smooth after-taste.
I would recommend this wine – especially for this price – to any of my wine fancy-ing friends. This bottle would be a perfect buy for a dinner party or for a summer salad and spicey pasta dish at home.
Wine Grade: 6 out of 10
Drunkness: 1 out of 10
Drink responsibly and please do not drink and drive.
Utah Fashionistas
Well if you live in Utah or you’ll be there on Friday – you have to check out the wonderfully peculiar studio of Black Chandelier by Jared Gold. Seriously the new Pink Chandelier kids clothes are enough for me to buy an airline ticket to go!
Kicks I could get into

Steve Aoki’s Signature “strapped” shoe by Supra is now available at American Rag and Kitson
